These chick cupcakes are super easy to make. All you need is to make your favourite cupcake recipe (we have a bunch you can check out here) and gather the following tools to decorate:
- Large Round Piping Tip (Wilton 1A)
- Small round piping tip (Wilton No. 2)
- Yellow, black, and orange food coloring (gel or liquid works fine)
- If you don’t have black food coloring, you can also use melted chocolate as well.
- If you don’t have orange food coloring, you can also mix Red and Yellow food coloring
- 3 x Small Piping Bags (12 inch)
First, prepare your your buttercream frosting. We used a simple vanilla buttercream frosting. Then, separate your frosting into separate bowls so that you can dye each of them a separate color: Yellow, orange, and black. You will need proportionately more yellow food coloring than orange, and only a little bit of black.
First, fill your piping bag with the large round 1A piping tip with yellow frosting. Pipe a large circle on the base of the cupcake by holding your piping bag perpendicular to the cupcake (straight) and move your way upwards, pulling up gently and releasing pressure at the top to form a pointy tip.
Fill your second piping bag fitted with the small round No. 2 piping tip with orange frosting. Pipe on the feet for the chicks in a large W shape as well as the beak by piping on the face and pulling outward while releasing pressure on the piping bag. Feel free to practice your icing on a piece of parchment/wax paper prior to doing it on the cupcake go gauge how much pressure to apply while piping the cupcake.
Finally, pipe on the eyes with the black frosting or melted chocolate. That’s it, your chick cupcakes are done!
